SHIMANO TEKOTA DRAG INSTALLATION PART 3
PRIOR TO REINSTALLING THE SIDE COVER, CHECK THE FIT OF THE BALL BEARING INTO THE SIDE COVER. IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT THE BALL BEARING CAN EASILY BE INSERTED & REMOVED WITH ONLY A SLIGHT PUSH OF YOUR FINGER! IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, ALL IS NOT LOST! WITH A FINE PIECE OF SANDPAPER OR EMERY CLOTH JUST SIMPLY SAND THE AREA WHERE THE OUTSIDE OF THE BEARING COMES ON CONTACT WITH THE SIDE COVER, CHECKING EVERY SO OFTEN BY INSERTING THE BEARING UNTIL IT SLIDES IN & OUT WITH JUST A LITTLE RESISTANCE. JUST DON'T OVER DO IT. ONCE YOUR SATISFIED BLOW IT OUT & ADD A LITTLE LUBE OR GREASE. BE SURE TO BACK OFF THE CAST CONTROL CAP A FEW TURNS INDICATED BY WHITE ARROW IN STEP #28B & PLACE THE CLUTCH LEVER IN THE ENGAGED (FORWARD) POSITION INDICATED BY THE RED ARROW & YOU'RE READY TO SLIDE THE SIDE COVER ON. NOW YOU CAN SLIDE THE SIDE COVER ON. ONCE YOU'VE SLID THE SIDE COVER ON YOU MAY NOTICE A SMALL GAP BETWEEN WHERE THE SIDE COVER MEETS THE FRAME. SIMPLY JIGGLE THE CLUTCH LEVER A FEW TIMES & YOU SHOULD HEAR & FEEL A FIRM SNAP (USUALLY). YOU CAN NOW REPLACE THE SIX SIDE COVER SCREWS. IF YOU LIFT THE SIDE COVER UP WHILE DOING THIS PART OF REASSEMBLY, THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THE TABS ON THE ROLLER CLUTCH TUBE SLID OUT OF THE TOP KEYED DRAG PLATE. IF YOUR BEARING IS SITTING WAY HIGHER THAN PICTURED IN STEP #29 (IT'LL BE WAY HIGHER!), THAT'S A GOOD INDICATION THE TABS CAME OUT OF PLACE. NO BIG DEAL, JUST REPEAT THIS PROCEEDUREDURE.
SLIDE THE BALL BEARING IN PLACE & ADD A LITTLE LUBE...
SLIDE THE BALL BEARING DUST SHIELD & COPPER WASHERS TOGETHER. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SLIDE THEM DOWN ALL THE WAY... YET
SLIDE ON THE FIRST SET OF COMPRESSION SPRING WASHERS. THEY SHOULD GO TOGETHER LIKE THIS;

SLIDE ON THE SECOND SET OF COMPRESSION SPRING WASHERS. THEY SHOULD GO TOGETHER LIKE THIS;

INSTALL THE COPPER / TEFLON STAR DRAG WASHER THAT WAS HIDING INSIDE THE STAR DRAG KNOB IN STEP #5A, WITH THE TEFLON SIDE UP. NOW PUSH THE ENTIRE WASHER / SHIM SET DOWN UNTIL IT STOPS ON THE BEARING.
INSTALL THE COPPER / TEFLON STAR DRAG WASHER THAT WAS HIDING INSIDE THE STAR DRAG KNOB IN STEP #5A, WITH THE TEFLON SIDE UP. NOW PUSH THE ENTIRE WASHER / SHIM SET DOWN UNTIL IT STOPS ON THE BEARING.
REINSERT THE CLICK INDEX PIN.
PUSH IN THE CLICK INDEX PIN IN WITH YOUR INDEX FINGER & HOLD IT THERE.
WHILE KEEPING THE CLICK INDEX PIN FIRMLY PRESSED IN, YOU CAN NOW THREAD ON THE STAR DRAG. ONCE YOU HAVE THE STAR DRAG THREADED ON (A FEW THREADS), INSERT YOUR SLOTTED JEWELER'S SCREWDRIVER THROUGH THE TOP ACCESS HOLE ON THE END OF THE DRIVE SHAFT UNTIL IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE CLICK PIN, AS SHOWN IN STEP #35. NOW APPLY A LITTLE PRESSURE TO BOTH PIN & SPRING. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO THREAD THE STAR DRAG THE REST OF THE WAY DOWN UNTIL IT HITS THE TEFLON WASHER. NOW YOU CAN CHECK OUT TO SEE IF THE CLICK INDEX IS WORKING PROPERLY, BY TURNING THE STAR DRAG IN EITHER DIRECTION LISTENING FOR AN AUDIBLE "CLICK" BE CAREFUL NOT TO SPIN THE DRAG KNOB TO FAR, OTHERWISE YOU'LL HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!
THIS IS THE TRICKIEST PART OF THE DRAG INSTALLATION & DON'T BE SURPRISED IF IT TAKES A FEW TRIES! IF YOUR DOING SEVERAL TEKOTAS, THIS WILL BECOME A BREEZE BY THE TIME YOU GET TO THE THIRD REEL!
TIGHTEN THE STAR DRAG DOWN SNUG & NOW INSTALL THE FRICTION WASHER... CUPPED SIDE DOWN.
SLIDE THE HANDLE ASSY. ONTO THE DRIVE SHAFT, FOLLOWED BY SNUGGING DOWN THE HANDLE NUT.
NOW YOU CAN REPLACE THE HANDLE NUT RETAINER & SCREW.
CONGRADULATIONS! YOU HAVE NOW SUCSESSFULLY COMPLETED THE INSTALLATION OF A NEW DRAG SYSTEM ON A TEKOTA 700 REEL!
